Enhancing Livestock Welfare and Operational Efficiency with YoungStar Matting at Dorrigo Saleyards

Enhancing Livestock Welfare and Operational Efficiency with YoungStar Matting at Dorrigo Saleyards

Dorrigo, New South Wales
Navigating Challenges in a High-Rainfall Area

Dorrigo Saleyards, located in the high-rainfall region of the Northern Tablelands, has been grappling with significant challenges related to cattle management, particularly concerning lameness and soft feet issues in cattle due to the wet conditions. With over 6,000 head of cattle being managed, sold, and auctioned annually, ensuring the well-being and safety of the livestock became paramount.

Choosing YoungStar Mat: A Strategic Move Towards Enhanced Animal Welfare

The Dorrigo Saleyards Committee, under the leadership of Brad Schwartz and management of Tahnee Tosh, identified the need for a robust solution to mitigate the prevalent issues. Previous matting solutions, while providing some relief, were merely stop-gap measures and presented difficulties in cleaning and maintenance. The YoungStar Mat was chosen for its superior quality, ease of cleaning, and potential to significantly reduce foot issues and prevent slipping among the cattle.

Seamless Installation and Immediate Impact

The installation of the YoungStar Mat, by the Numat install team, spanned three days and involved laying rapid-set concrete in uneven areas to ensure a level surface for the matting. The immediate impact was evident – a notable reduction in foot issues among the cattle and prevention of slipping, particularly among older cattle during prime or fat sales.

"Due to being in such a high rainfall area, one of the major concerns here at the sale yards is the lameness and soft feet in cattle. We had other matting in previous years, and whilst it did lessen the impact, it was hard to clean and it was sort of only a stop-gap measure. Hence why we've invested in the new matting."

Upholding Animal Welfare and Enhancing Operational Throughput

The YoungStar Mat has not only addressed the immediate concerns related to animal welfare but also facilitated an increase in operational throughput at the yards. The enhanced safety and comfort provided by the matting have proven to be beneficial, especially when utilizing third-party computer-based auction programs, ensuring that the cattle are managed and sold in a humane and efficient manner.

A Highly Recommended Solution for Livestock Facilities

The positive outcomes derived from the installation of the YoungStar Mat have been substantial and tangible. The Dorrigo Saleyards team highly recommends the matting to other sale yards and livestock facilities, underscoring its pivotal role in enhancing animal welfare and operational efficiency.

"The matting has given us great benefits throughout the time we've had it installed and we would highly recommend it to other sale yards and livestock facilities."

The installation of the YoungStar Mat at Dorrigo Saleyards is a great example of a strategic approach to resolving challenges related to livestock management in adverse weather conditions. The positive impact on animal welfare and operational efficiency underscores the matting’s pivotal role in enhancing the overall functionality and productivity of sale yards and similar facilities.

Revitalizing Sydney International Equestrian Centre with Kura Mat

Revitalizing Sydney International Equestrian Centre with Kura Mat

Sydney, New South Wales
The Objective: Upgrading an Iconic Venue with Kura Matting

The Sydney International Equestrian Centre, an iconic venue that has served since the 2000 Olympics, recently marked its 23rd birthday. Tasked with rejuvenating this aging facility, CTQ Group was contracted by the NSW’s Office of Sport to undertake a significant matting upgrade. “The two fundamental reasons why we upgraded the matting on this venue was for the aesthetics and for horse comfort, and also for reduced waste usage of straw and stable matting,” explains Blake Williams from CTQ Group.

The Product: Kura Matting – A Solution that Checks all the Boxes

After extensive research and consultation, CTQ Group chose NumatAGRI’s Kura for the upgrade project. “We used the Numat Kura for a total of 146 stables,” says Blake. The choice of Kura was rooted in its unique blend of functionality, aesthetic appeal, and sustainability.

"Previously they would go through six or seven bales. Now they are reduced down to two to three bales which reduces costs and also reduces landfill."

The Installation: Seamless Process with Significant Results

With delivery from New Zealand to Australia being “fast and easy,” the Kura mats provided an interlocking system that eased the installation process. The result was a rubber matting that perfectly suited the Centre’s concrete flooring. “The installation process was quite relatively easy, and overall this rubber matting definitely solved all our issues out here,” Blake adds.

The Impact: Reduced Costs, Increased Comfort, and a Boost in Sustainability

The new Kura mats have brought about a significant decrease in straw usage. “Previously they would go through six or seven bales. Now they are reduced down to two to three bales which reduces costs and also reduces landfill,” shares Blake. This reduction not only led to significant cost savings but also contributed positively to waste management and environmental sustainability.

Conclusion: A Successful Upgrade for Long-term Benefits

The Kura matting upgrade project at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre proved to be a tremendous success. The benefits of the Kura product were clearly visible in the improved aesthetics, enhanced horse comfort, and considerable reduction in straw usage and waste generation. “There’s been zero issues of drainage or waste collection between the mats,” Blake comments, further showcasing the product’s effectiveness.

Implementation of Improved Rubber Matting at Burmah Station

Implementation of Improved Rubber Matting at Burmah Station

Graman, New South Wales
Company Overview

Paraway Pastoral Company, the owner of Burmah Station located near Graman NSW, operates a thriving cattle station under the stewardship of Dick Drysdale. Having been with the company for six years, Drysdale oversees the operation, which sees a fluctuation in cattle numbers throughout the year, peaking to around 3,000 to 4,000 head during the months of May through July.

Problem Identification

Prior to 2023, Burmah Station had been experiencing issues with the cattle slipping on the existing yard matting. The poor design and texture of the old matting, which had started to deteriorate, was causing the cattle to lose their footing. Consequently, incidents of cattle slipping and injuring themselves, sometimes severely with dislocated back legs, became a significant problem. The associated costs were also substantial. As each steer could be worth over $2,000, losing even 10% of 1,000 head through injury represented a substantial financial loss.

In addition to causing injury to the cattle, the old matting was contributing to a noisy, chaotic environment. Cattle that slipped in the race, or narrow chute, would often crash into the sides, creating noise and agitation.

Furthermore, the old matting was uncomfortable for the staff to walk on, a fact not unnoticed by Drysdale who highlighted this aspect of daily work at the station.

Solution Implementation

In an attempt to address these issues, Burmah Station decided to switch to YoungStar matting. Specially designed for cattle, it is fast becoming the industry standard for the prevention of slipping. In addition to being safer for the cattle, the new matting was also more comfortable for the staff to walk on compared to the old mats.

"This new matting, it's got the chunky bits in it, so it grabs their feet and they don't actually slip."

Results and Feedback

The results of this change were immediate. The new matting has significantly reduced the incidence of slipping and related injuries. Drysdale estimates that the rate of falls has been cut by at least half, representing a significant saving in potential losses.

The impact has extended beyond the reduction of injury and associated costs. The new matting in the race has reduced noise and agitation among the cattle. Since they no longer slip, they move through the race more smoothly without crashing into the sides. This improvement has also made the working environment less stressful for both the cattle and the staff.

"With YoungStar, they don't slip, so they're not bashing up the side, so they just flow through a lot easier and a lot better."

Conclusion

The transition to the new rubber matting has been highly successful. Drysdale enthusiastically recommended it, stating that the benefits have been dramatic and clear. The positive effects on cattle safety, staff comfort, and overall operation efficiency mark this project as a resounding success for Paraway Pastoral Company at Burmah Station.

Improved Safety and Comfort: Rubber Matting Installation at Rangers Valley Feedlot

Improved Safety and Comfort: Rubber Matting Installation at Rangers Valley Feedlot

Glen Innes, New South Wales

Rangers Valley Feedlot is a cattle processing facility located in Glen Innes, northern New South Wales. They process up to 1250 to 2000 head of cattle per week, depending on demand. The facility experienced numerous slip and fall injuries due to inadequate rubber matting in their processing shed.

Objective:

To evaluate the effectiveness of the Youngstar Rubber Matting from NumatAGRI in reducing slip and fall injuries and improving overall safety and comfort at Rangers Valley Feedlot.

Implementation:

Rangers Valley Feedlot initially decided to trial the Youngstar Rubber Matting in high pressure areas and on corners to test its performance over a few months. The trial was deemed successful, leading to a complete replacement of the old rubber matting with the new Youngstar product.

"The design of the Youngstar rubber matting from NumatAGRI is a significant improvement on any rubber we've had in the past."

Results:

  1. Significant improvement in design and durability: The Youngstar Rubber Matting was a notable upgrade from the previous rubber matting. The old rubber could not withstand the heavy traffic, leading to peeling, wear, and installation issues. The new rubber mats, on the other hand, have proved durable and reliable.

  2. Enhanced cleanliness and ease of maintenance: The Youngstar Rubber Matting has made cleaning and hosing down the processing shed easier, contributing to better hygiene and upkeep.

  3. Increased comfort for cattle: The new rubber mats provide a more comfortable surface for the cattle to walk and run on, which potentially leads to reduced stress and improved overall welfare.

  4. Improved staff safety: The upgraded rubber matting has led to a significant reduction in slip and fall injuries for both cattle and staff, resulting in cost savings and increased productivity.

"We noticed with the amount of slip and fall injuries that we were having, it was actually costing us money and time with steers that had been injured in the processing shed. Over the course of time, with the lifespan of the YoungStar rubber, it will easily pay for itself."

Future Plans:

Given the success of the Youngstar Rubber Matting in the processing shed, Rangers Valley Feedlot plans to expand its usage to their hospital facilities and dispatch yard. This decision is based on the improved safety, comfort, and cleanliness benefits observed during the initial installation.

Conclusion:

The installation of the Youngstar Rubber Matting from NumatAGRI at Rangers Valley Feedlot has led to considerable improvements in safety, comfort, and cleanliness. By reducing slip and fall injuries, enhancing the wellbeing of the cattle, and simplifying maintenance, the investment in the new rubber matting is expected to pay for itself over its lifespan. Rangers Valley Feedlot is highly satisfied with the results and plans to expand the use of the product to other areas of their facility.

"We're looking into installing the Youngstar rubber matting into our hospital facilities as well as our despatch yard as well because overall it's made such a great improvement to our processing shed, and we're just really happy with it."
